Well Sylvan Heights Bird Park of course! \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, April 18th from 10AM-2PM\, Sylvan Heights Bird Park will celebrate Earth Day\, the largest science event of the year. This event brings the public together with over 20 regional environmental and community organizations in an interactive event that highlights careers in the STEM (science\, technology\, engineering\, and math) field through fun hands-on demonstrations\, experiments\, and activities. \n\n\n\nVisitors of all ages will have the chance to dig for fossils with the Aurora Fossil Museum and Scotland Neck’s Rock Museum\, learn to fly with Elizabeth City State University’s Dept. of Aviation\, learn about the latest in firefighting technology with Coopers Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department\, interact with fainting goats\, miniature horses\, reptiles and of course birds- just to name a few! DESCRIPTION:A Pileated Woodpecker in the wetland at Sylvan Heights Bird Park  |  Photo © Sylvan Heights Bird Park\n\n\n\nBe part of a global community science project by watching birds at Sylvan Heights Bird Park!\n\n\n\nThe NC Bird Count is part of the Great Backyard Bird Count\, an annual event where citizens watch and count as many birds as possible over four days.  These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Sylvan Heights expert will be available in the park’s Tree House from 11 am – 3 pm to help you: \n\n\n\n– Locate the best birding locations in the park \n\n\n\n– ‎Identify the wild birds you see and hear \n\n\n\n– ‎Record your observations in eBird or Merlin  \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: This count is for wild birds only. Birds seen or heard in the aviaries at Sylvan Heights Bird Park should not be recorded. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will need:\n\n\n\n– ‎Your own binoculars or scope* \n\n\n\n– ‎A phone or tablet with eBird or Merlin installed (we can assist you with this!) \n\n\n\n‎*We will have a limited number of binoculars available to borrow\, but please bring your own if you can. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free with paid park admission or membership. DESCRIPTION:UPDATE 2/3/26: Due to hazardous road conditions on the refuges after the recent winter storms\, this tour has been canceled. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCome spend the day with Sylvan Heights Bird Park as we embark on a full day excursion exploring both Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in search of migrating waterfowl. Our team of educators will take you on a guided adventure to see large populations of ducks\, geese and swans that winter in eastern NC. Included in this adventure is a trip to the Red Wolf Center in Columbia\, NC to learn about eastern NC’s endangered red wolves. Both wolves and waterfowl share these habitats\, and this area offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included:\n\n\n\n– Round-trip transportation from Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck\, NC– Guided tours of Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.– A visit to the Red Wolf Center in Columbia\, NC– Snacks– Water \n\n\n\nLunch is not provided\, but we will be stopping at Martelle’s Feed House restaurant in Engelhard\, NC where guests may purchase their own lunch. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nItinerary\n\n\n\n9:20 am – Depart from Sylvan Heights Bird Park \n\n\n\n11:00 am—12: 00pm – Visit Red Wolf Center \n\n\n\n12:50 – 1:50 pm – Lunch at Martelle’s Feed House \n\n\n\n2:05pm—3:30pm – Birdwatching at Mattamuskeet NWR \n\n\n\n4:15pm-5:30pm – Birdwatching at Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes NWR \n\n\n\n7:10pm – Return to Sylvan Heights Bird Park \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\n\n\n– Bird identification guides will be available\, however you are encouraged to bring your favorite guide. SUMMARY:Oyster Roast for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:You eat the oysters – the birds eat the shells!  Our annual Oyster Roast returns on January 17\, 2026. \n\n\n\nThe evening celebrates North Carolina’s oyster season with all-you-can-eat oysters and shrimp\, as well as non-seafood and vegetarian dishes. Proceeds from ticket sales support the park’s conservation and education programs\, but the Oyster Roast also helps the birds in a much more immediate way. Born on January 17th\, 1944\, Mike dedicated his life and career to the conservation of birds\, and had a direct role in the recovery of several endangered waterfowl species.
