Engineering Flight Art Workshop

As part of the North Carolina Science Festival, Janie Johnson, North Carolina watercolor and sketch artist (janiejohnsonartist.com) will offer a workshop at Sylvan Heights from 10:00am-12:30 pm. This workshop will focus on the movement of birds, the engineering process of bird wings and flight, bodies for flight and motion, and how to sketch birds in the process of movement and flight. Birds found both in the park and in natural habitats will be observed. The workshop will begin in the open aviary, Birds of Paradise, where participants will have opportunities to observe birds, wings, feathers, feet and movement. Later, educational birds will give additional observation looking at wing and feather structures in preparation for guided practice and instruction, sketching and drawing birds in flight and body structure by the artist.
Participants will have hands on and structured guidance throughout the workshop.   WORKSHOP MATERIALS: Sylvan Heights Bird park will provide a sketchpad and pencil to participants. Participants may want to bring these other recommended materials: eraser, watercolor pencils or crayons, colored pencils and a camera/ phone camera.
