Join us for our biggest STEM celebration of the year!   Join us for our biggest STEM celebration of the year!  Sylvan Heights Bird Park’s Earth Day Celebration offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the uses and impacts of science in our daily lives by engaging in hands-on learning with local museums, universities, environmental organizations and STEM professionals.

Help us celebrate the NCSciFest theme “Engineering Tomorrow” by putting your engineering skills to the test! Throughout the day participants can participate in the “Bird Nest Engineering Challenge” to see how well they can measure up against birds-  “Architects of the animal kingdom”. There will be special exhibits, activities and crafts for the whole family!

When they have filled up their science scavenger hunt card, visitors will turn it in at the Science Festival table to receive a raffle ticket for their chance to win a prize! There will be 3 different drawings throughout Earth day.

Bird Nest Engineering Challenge

As part of the North Carolina Science Festival, Sylvan Heights Bird Park will provide an activity table with an engineering focus designed to challenge participants through the connection of birds and bird nesting / habitats. Birds are expert nest engineers and their ability to build nests that support and provide their eggs and chicks is an adaptation that has helped them survive and thrive in their environment.

This challenge will support engineering STEM through solutions focused on bird habitats and life cycles. Using “found” (materials provided at center) natural materials, participants will have the opportunity to create and design bird nests that support three eggs( marbles).

Guidance and help will be provide for those who need it, leading to successful nest building and a better understanding of how creative birds are in different environments.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park’s Earth Day Celebration is free with paid park admission or membership.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park is proud to participate in the North Carolina Science Festival by presenting science programs and activities throughout the month of April!  This year’s NCSciFest Theme is “Engineering Tomorrow”.
