Birds & Bears Guided Wildlife Tour

Come spend the day with Sylvan Heights Bird Park as we embark on a full day excursion exploring both Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in search of migrating waterfowl and resident black bears. Our team of educators will take you on a guided adventure to see large populations of ducks, geese and swans that winter in eastern NC. Included in this adventure is a trip to the Bear-ology Museum in Plymouth, NC to learn about eastern NC’s black bears. Both bears and waterfowl share these habitats, and this area offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
RAIN DATE: In the event of bad weather on January 10th, this tour will be postponed until January 24th.

– Round-trip transportation from Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck, NC
– Guided tours of Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
– A visit to the Bear-ology Black Bear Museum in Plymouth, NC

– Water
Lunch is not provided, but we will be stopping at Riverview Cafe Restaurant in Plymouth, NC where guests may purchase their own lunch.
Itinerary
9:30 am: Depart from Sylvan Heights Bird Park
11:00 am: Visit to Bear-ology Museum for a guided program
12:15 – 1:30 pm: Lunch at Riverview Cafe
Until 5:30 pm: Birdwatching at Mattamuskeet NWR and the Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes NWR
7:30 pm: Return to Sylvan Heights Bird Park
What to bring
– Bird identification guides will be available, however you are encouraged to bring your favorite guide. If you journal or keep sketch books, don’t forget to bring those, too.
– Binoculars (we will have extras for anyone needing to borrow a pair)
– Dress for the weather and possible muddy situations within the refuge, even with most viewing from the van. Plan to layer for comfort.
Cancellation Policy
Please contact us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend so that we may open your spot up for other guests. Cancellations made within 48 hours of departure are not eligible for refunds.
