Sylvan Heights’ Education Programs provide students entertaining and meaningful eco-education experiences. All of our programs involve students in safe, supervised activities which personalize the importance of conserving wildlife and wetlands. Education Coordinator Dan Louk is responsible for the design of the age-specific programs offered through Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park & Eco-Center.
See information on Education Sponsorships School Programs Dan has developed Pre-visit Activity Packets to assist teachers in preparing students for their visit to Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park. The information allows teachers to become familiar with the selected program by providing background information, terminology sheets, and student activities. This also allows for re-enforcement of material to assist in curriculum testing. All Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park & Eco-Center education programs are correlated with the national and North Carolina Standard Course of Study in Science.
Wetlands Education & Research
The objective of our research programs is to help bring the local environment alive for students and give them a sense of how their area connects with the rest of the world. Students will be able to participate in actual research projects, share field observations, and actually apply the skills they learn in school to a real world discipline.
Wetland Habitat Development Develop your own wetland on-site at your school, to register with the National Wildlife Federation. Our staff will come and teach your students about the importance of wetlands, and guide you through the steps to transform a small area of your school grounds into a wetland lab, for your students to utilize for years. This project promotes teamwork, responsibility and interacting with the community. If you want to empower your students with the tools to succeed, this is a wonderful opportunity.
